Tasha Layton Spent Three Days in Death Valley Seeking God
September 23, 2026
Tasha Layton spent three days alone in Death Valley National Park with a single purpose: to seek God with nothing else competing for her attention. That retreat is the heart of MEET ME IN THE VALLEY, her short film, which shares its name with her song.
In a clip from the film, Layton explains that she came to the desert for solitude — to strip away the noise, set the distractions down, and meet with God.
The trip grew out of the song. She wrote “Meet Me in the Valley” last year, and before the words arrived she felt God pressing a short phrase on her: get low. For Layton, that meant bringing her offering humbly, entering God’s presence without pretense, and being willing to lay down anything He asked her to lay down. When the song followed, the connection felt unmistakable — so she decided to take the instruction as literally as she could and go to the lowest place she could reach, to reflect on where she had been and consider where she was going.
Death Valley was not a comfortable choice. Layton has been candid that she was uneasy about snakes, mountain lions and the possibility of running into strangers far from help. She prayed and fasted across the three days, and she went in with real questions rather than a script: what God might do in her and through her in an intense situation, and what He might heal in her heart that she didn’t even know was wounded.
What she came away with is the idea the song keeps circling — that God meets people in their lowest valleys, and that the low place is often where healing begins. She frames the wilderness not as somewhere to escape but as somewhere to be led through, with God staying close the entire way.
Layton has also been clear that a valley isn’t always a place you can drive to. Writing on Instagram, she described the song as a prayer for the moments when we feel stuck in the low places, and said she hopes anyone walking through a difficult season hears in it a reminder that God comes close with comfort, strength and peace.
That’s the hope she carries for the film, too. More than a behind-the-scenes look at how a song came together, MEET ME IN THE VALLEY is an invitation — she wants the people who watch it and listen to the song to come away wanting to seek God for themselves, wherever their own valley happens to be.
